How the journey started to some well-deserved R&R

The journey from Panamá city to Portobelo started by taking the Panama Canal Railway train which travels along the Panama Canal. A train that has been refurbished and repurposed to amongst other things, provide tourists and nationals alike, a scenic trip to the city of Colón.

Do take some time to check-out the city of Colón especially if you are a tourist so that you may take advantage of the world's biggest duty free zone.

«Panamá Canal Railway Co.» . 1855: During its first 12 yrs. of operation, the Panamá #railroad carried $750 million in gold dust, nuggets, and #gold & #silver coins. . Refurbished and repurposed on 2001, it also serves as a #tourist sightseeing #train traveling along the Panamá Canal and linking Panamá city on the #Pacific to Colón city on the #Atlantic & viceversa. . Once in the city of Colón, you can Uber a ride to the quaint city of Portobelo. My best recommendation!

The wealth that sustained the Spanish #Empire sailed from the #port of #Portobelo. . Its strategic point made it the crossroad of all the #gold, #silver and precious stones that arrived from the Aztec, Mayan and Inca empires enroute to the financial capital of #Spain: #Sevilla. . Tip:
If you would like a 180 degree view of this small but rich-in-history-city, make sure you cross the main street and take a very short hike to the top of what used to be a cathedral, now covered in grass and surrounded by trees that make it look more like a mountain which blends right in with the local scenery.
Portobelo, Panamá
Portobelo is the place to explore and learn more about the real pirates of the Caribbean. This used to be a walled city that had been burnt down and ransacked by pirates and other explorers trying to acquire the riches that transited through this area.

«The real #pirates of the #Caribbean» . The booming trade of the annual “Portobelo Trade Fair", made #Portobelo the coveted prey of many pirates of the time. . The historic site of Portobelo is a superb example of XVII century military architecture on the Caribbean coast and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. . • The black Christ of Portobelo:
During the month of October, many pilgrims head to Portobelo to pay homage to their black Christ. Legend has it that

«El Otro Lado: A private retreat» @design_hotels . Literally on "the other side" of the quaint city of #Portobelo and overseeing the bay, your stay here can truly be custom-made to meet your adventurous or R&R mode. . Read more on my bio link: http://www.el-musafir.com/panama
