The 39 most significant things I've done before turning 40!

2/4/2017

Turning 40 is indeed reaching a milestone! ... and yes, I'm getting older and wiser too, but I have had my fair share of crazy, adrenaline-filled and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

As a language strategist and an avid traveler, here is my bucket list of the things that I have accomplished thus far. In no particular order, except for #1.

I'm still young and there's much more than meets the eye!

1. Returning the favor and traveling with my parents abroad:

Although the trip was not to a really far away destination, it was simply priceless to experience with them what-it-seemed-like going back in time in Cuba. My father is an avid music fan and dancer, and to be in Cuba where you can listen or dance to the Caribbean rhythm of Cuban bands at almost every other street corner, was fun. Moreover, driving cars from the 50's and 60's and listen to my parents retell stories of their younger years ... wow!

Meliã Buenavista: Cayo Santa María My parents and I have been traveling throughout western and central Cuba for the past week; therefore, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing weekend in Cayo Santa María. #TakeYours Not to miss: The sunset champagne gathering between 7:30 - 8:30pm everyday. 2. Welcoming the New Year, not in one but in several foreign cities:

I try to spend Christmas and New Year's with my parents and siblings in Puerto Armuelles, Panamá ... but at times, I have spent these holidays with friends abroad.
Here I'm with my sister in Venice, but I have also been in Zagreb, Phuket, and Aqaba to name a few.

#encarnavalestoy ~ Today it's #martesdecarnaval / #mardigras / #karneval . Despite the Christmas tree, glad you did not notice! ... My sister and I started our #carnivalparty this January in no other place than famous #venezia @ the Hotel Carlton Capri. 3. Dressing up for a few charity balls but mainly to take out these gorgeous gals to the "Royal Opera House Muscat" in the Sultanate of Oman:

4. Getting my adrenaline pumping by sky diving in Dubai:

#tbt I don't always #tandem, but when I do ... I go to @skydivedubai. . It was November 1st, 2013 when a group of friend and I signed our lives away and took the #plunge ... just for the #thrill of a 6 min. #freefall . 5. Reaching new heights at a far-flung destination: Tibet!

You can read more about my experiences flying into Chengdu and then into Lhasa to get acclimatized before making my way to the "Mt. Everest Base Camp" here.

7. Traveling solo

I have traveled solo throughout most of the countries that formed the former Yugoslavia, through northern Spain, Singapore, the Philippines, the East coast of the United States and many Middle Eastern countries.

8. Traveling abroad with friends:

In the same way that I have traveled alone, I have also shared many experiences traveling abroad with a great group of friends, whether we traveled and explored Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Lebanon, France, the United Kingdom and Scotland, Italy, Germany and Greece ... to name a few ... we ALL returned still being friends!

"The Basilica Cistern" #tbt . Renovated in 1985, this underground #Byzantine cistern in #Istanbul is quite popular with tourists. . Other than encountering a few Medusa-head column bases as you walk along raised wooden platforms feeling water drops from the vaulted ceiling and gazing at ghostly carps on the water below, you can also have your photo taken. . 9. Go wine tasting:

Not only have I gone wine tasting in places like France and Tuscany, I have also had the opportunity to do the same in less known places that could also rival the afore-mentioned. These places were Lebanon, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and in Santorini, Greece.

10. Running with the bulls in Pamplona during the San Fermines:

As I have personally confessed, on my 1st time back in 2009, I only ran a few meters and immediately climbed the nearest fence that I saw. So I had to come back and face my fear, and in 2012 I ran the entire thing all the way into the arena.

#tbt □ 1 de enero, 2 de febrero, 3 de marzo, 4 de abril ... 5 de mayo, 6 de junio ... 7 de julio = ¡San Fermín! □ Today was the start of the #runningofthebulls in Pamplona, España. ¡Gora, #gora San Fermín! Read more on my bio link: (pronto) Destinations ➡️ Europe ➡️ España

11. Sleeping outdoors in the Arabian desert ... glamping at the "1000 Nights Camp":

It’s #humpday! Camel trekking through the Ash Sharqiyah Sands in the Sultanate of Oman is quite an experience! . Organized by @1000nightscamp, we trek throughout the desert for 8 km every day. We trek 4 km in the morning until we reach our first stop around noon to be well-received and delighted by a well-deserved lunch buffet and plenty of water and juices to replenish our strength for the afternoon trek. . After eating lunch under an improvised tent, we all succumb to a midday nap; an hour later, we embark on the last 4 km trek to our final destination of the day where we will set up camp and spend the night under the starry night within the vastness of the desert. . 15. Going back to basics in the San Blas Islands in Panamá:

17. Go skinny-dipping in the moonlight!

18. Visiting at least one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, if not the 7 Natural Wonders of the World:

In this case, as voted by the public, the Puerto Princesa Underground River in the Philippines. Read more here. #itsmorefuninthephilippines

1/7: ✔️Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Also known as the Underground River, it's an 8.2 km long navigable river that flows directly into the South China Sea. As you navigate under this unique limestone/karst mountain, you'll listen to an audio guide as you look up awe-struck by various rock formations, stalagmites and stalactites, thousands of #bats and a few #snakes. As you look up, make sure you keep your mouth closed as you may be "blessed" by receiving either droplets of fresh cold water OR some unwanted & warm bat urine or poop! Major outside threat to this mountain-to-sea ecosystem: #Tourists, as the guide points out that they receive between 900 - 1500 visitors a day, but a cap at 600 is being implemented to safeguard the wildlife and slowly but ever-growing rock formations! 21. Zip-lining or bungee jumping somewhere safe!

I have gone bungee jumping in Costa Rica and the most exhilarating one was a Canyon Swing jump at the Last Resort in Nepal. As to zip-lining, I have done so in Boquete Tree Trek in Panamá, the Flight of the Gibbon in Chiang Mai, Thailand ... and below, zip lining to an island in El Nido, the Philippines.

... and I made it to "El Nido" in #palawan. Zip lining #superman style is the way to delight your senses and adrenaline as you oversee the area surrounding Las Cabañas beach. That's 750 m. long from the main island to a different one for only 700 PHP. . Just 10 min. away from the hustle and bustle of El Nido town, take a tricycle (150 PHP) and then warm-up escalating more than a few steps up; stop, #breathe and continue because you really want to do this ... and reach the top! 23. Attending the Highland Games in Inverness, Scotland:

Read more about my visit to Scotland here! This was a very special trip with a very special someone.

#inverness is the capital of the #scottish #highlands and #bughtpark is the focal point for this traditional #heritage spectacle, the #invernesshighlandgames. This #tbt depicts an #athlete competing on the #cabertoss. Caber tossing an approx. 6m tall and 79kg log is quite challenging especially when you need to make it turn end-over-end away from the "tosser/thrower". Amongst one of my many memories from attending this event was that on this particular year, a team from the #Netherlands (wearing orange #kilts and all) came to compete but as they started drinking earlier, they were banned from competing and only were allowed to participate in the relay run! 26. Eating rare and exotic meals:

I have had my fair share of exotic meals and I am always open to new experiences (at least once); such as when I tried rice & lamb prepared in the middle of the desert in Oman, Newari food in Kathmandu, Nepal, Loco Moco in Honolulu, crocodile sisig in Palawan, the Philippines, snails in Sevilla, Spain, or  ... moon cakes in Singapore:

"Mooncakes and the Mid-Autumn Festival" Singaporean as well as much of East Asia will gather tonight for dinner, display paper #lanterns everywhere and then be out and about staring at the bright full moon while enjoying #mooncakes for #desert. . #Legend has it that mooncakes are also associated with the folk tale of the Chinese #goddess Chang'e; while another folk tale involves the 14th century overthrow of the Mongolian empire in #China. . 27. Visiting the "Eagle's Nest" in the Bavarian Alps:

#throwback A year ago, a group of friends and I chose @viatortravel's “Bavarian Mountains including the Eagle's Nest". . To reach Hitler's former residence (now a mountaintop restaurant) at 1,820 m., you enter a 124 m long tunnel into the mountain where a golden brass elevator will take you in 41 seconds up another 124 m into the "summit of power". . The vistas of the #Bavarian and #Austrian #Alps are breathtaking and quite unique. Afterwards, you can walk through the nearby flora to the summit #cross nearby. . 32. Topping up my Mixology skills while abroad:

As I travel abroad, I have been lucky to try the main drinks that locals would drink when out and about or when at home. This said, I have tried rakija in the Levant region as well as in Turkey and throughout the Balkans. Here, I will share a special drink from Cuba: La Cachánchara

«La Canchánchara» The signature cocktail that originated in the World Heritage city of Trinidad, Cuba; it's made as follows: - 2 oz of aguardiente - 2 spoons of honey - 1 teaspoon of lemon juice - Ice Mix the honey and the lemon juice, add aguardiente and ice as desired, stir! .
